Occupants of a Brookfield home are lucky their house didn't go up in flames overnight after the base boards of their home caught fire.
Tauranga Fire Brigade was called to what was initially reported to be a house fire on Solomon Street about 6.30pm.
Tauranga firefighers checked a Brookfield home to make sure a fire, which had been put out by the occupants, hadn't spread to any other part of the house.
Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Mark Keller says the fire turned out to be a small one on the boards at the base of the house.
'It had started by one of the occupants discarding a cigarette. The fire was put out by the occupants.
'We checked underneath the house to make sure the fire hadn't spread.”
Mark says people need to be mindful of where they throw out their cigarettes.
'People need to make sure they are out and discard them in a safe container.
On the other side of the town, Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade was called to a small fire on a beach near Marine Parade about 10.40pm.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says the fire was extinguished with a bucket of water.
He says the Mount Maunganui Fire Brigade was also called to a home in Miro Street about 11.50pm after someone had locked themselves in a room.
'Firefighters had to dismantle the door lock to get the person out,” says Scott.
