Kaimai congestion clearing

UPDATE 4.10PM: The tail back of traffic over SH29 on the Kaimai range is expected to begin clearing over the next hour.

The road was blocked at about 3pm after a Toyota Hiace and a truck collided on a passing lane near the top of the hill on the Tauranga side.

The highway was blocked in both directions for at least half-an-hour until emergency services had freed the injured van driver.

With the driver on the way to hospital the wreckage was cleared at about 4pm, initially to one lane in both directions.

Earlier:

Emergency services are attending a crash near the top of State Highway 29 over the Kaimais.

Traffic is blocked in both directions after the head-on crash between a van and a truck occurred around 3pm.

The crash in believed to have happened near the passing lane close to the summit on the Tauranga side.

With SH29 highway closed in both directions options for travel to the Waikato are through the Waihi gorge, or south to Ngongotaha, but delays are expected.

Diversions are in place at SH29 and Cambridge Rd on the Tauranga side and SH29 and Raparapa Rd on the Matamata side.

Traffic senior sergeant Ian Campion says on the Waikato side, traffic will be diverted to State Highway 5 to Rotorua and through to Tauranga from Ngongotaha via State Highway 36.

On the Tauranga side traffic is to be diverted at Tauriko. With options of heading down SH36 or for Auckland traffic, to take SH2.

'At this stage there's no indication how long the diversions will be in place,” says Ian.

Road upgrade

Would have been better to have SH29 4-laned, population base say 2 million than a toll road to Paengaroa, population about 500. The thought processes that went into that are completely mind boggling of the result and a toll for life of all of BOP citizens.

has a point, at what cost is it to others when this happens

You have not obviously travelled on the Paengaroa to Tauranga you would realise it is not 500 people but more like 50 000 people getting product moved to the wharf etc. As an ex courier driver I could get from Ohope to the turn off quick and legal then from the turn off to the Mount. Lucky to get more than 80 km per hour. The Kaimai has always been a problem area and what ever is done will take a lot of planning and high cost. The real answer is a possible tunnel and at what cost?

Yet again

dodgy

Such a dodgy road those kaimai ranges. Pot holes that shift your car on the corners, passing lanes up the hill and around sharp corners... The kaimai road is third world...

Daily commuter....

As a daily commuter of SH29 (TGA-Matamata) I find comments about the road condition to be unfounded. The road condition is perfectly fine. Putting blame on the road is a lame excuse. The drivers inability to judge their own ability is the Number One factor. Putting pressure on trying to somehow improve an already good road is only spawning more retarded drivers. If you don't like the condition or contour of SH29, take another route. SH36 is way straighter, especially through the gorge. Or SH2, the Karangahake Gorge is a much wider road! Sheesh!

Road upgrade

I agree with Yogi that SH29 needs upgrading, if I have a choice I will not use that route over the Kaimai range after a near miss caused by other drivers. However, to say the TEL is not needed is very short sighted to say the least. Stand on the main road in Te Puke and then say the road is only being used by the 500 who live in Paengaroa. It is SH2. The only road from north to south if you want to avoid the Kaimai range or want to get to the east side of the country.

Usually the driver's fault

Driver inattention and tailgating being the among the worst common denominators. Throw in alcohol and/or drugs and you have a mine field.

Yep ...

Driver inattention and not driving competently nor to the conditions. Roads don't cause accidents - drivers do !!
