Good NYE for Coromandel Police

Police were kept busy overnight with New Year's Eve celebrations across the Coromandel but overall they are pretty happy with the behaviour of revellers.

The majority of arrests occurred in Whangamata, with 24 being made, and Whitianga, where 13 people spent the night in the cells.

Waikato District Command Centre senior sergeant Stephen Ambler says there were 'nominal numbers” of arrests in other areas of the district and police were as busy as they expected to be.

'We were pretty happy with how things went,” says Stephen. 'There was no significant violence and the majority of arrests were very minor and centred around alcohol.

'The only real concern was the numbers of intoxicated people, particularly young people. The majority of them were assisted by associates, or first aid people who were available in the area.”

Yesterday also saw more than 100 alcohol infringement notices issued to people for drinking in public places and liquor ban zones. Those who received notices also copped an instant $250 fine.

Stephen says police's focus was on prevention and they began issuing notices early on New Year's to encourage people with alcohol off of the streets.

Police also ran a major drink driving operation, targeting the Whitianga and Whangamata area specifically, he says.

'Officers stop and conducted 726 breath tests, of which 42 motorists required further breath testing procedures. From that number 30 passed while the other 12 were processed for drink driving.”

Stephen says this New Year's police definitely an improvement on previous celebrations right across the Coromandel.

This improvement has come in recent years due to preventative actions taken by police in the lead up to New Year's, along with staffing levels and revellers attitudes.

With the start of 2015 Stephen is hoping Coromandel locals will continue to keep themselves and their loved ones safe, particularly on the roads.

'We're continuing to have high traffic numbers on the road, so patience is required from motorists and just remember: the speed limit might be 100km but that doesn't mean you have to aim for it.

'As you'll know, there are many roads around the Coromandel that aren't suited to 100km so people just need to be careful and consider other road users.”
