Police: quiet lead up to NYE

While it's been a relatively quiet start to the holiday period police have still attended numerous domestic and theft incidents over the past week.

The majority of holidaymakers arrived in Whitianga after Boxing Day, plus many out-of-town police staff to help keep festivities over the New Year's period as friendly and safe as possible.

Whitianga police sergeant Andrew Morrison says they attended seven domestic incidents last week, with all of them involving arguments between family members.

Police also attended a domestic incident, sparked by excessive alcohol consumption, at a Waimarie Ave address on December 29.

'A Police Safety Order was issued to keep the couple apart,” says Andrew. 'Unfortunately having taken one person from the address the other decided to go for a drive.

The woman was later apprehended by police for driving with excess breath alcohol.

Andrew says there have been a number of thefts in the area, including property stolen from vehicles in car parks on State Highway 25 in Whenuakite, and the Tapu Coroglen Rd.

'Clothes were stolen off a Cook Dr clothesline on December 28, while a tote tank was stolen from a boat parked at a Waimarie Ave address on December 29.

'A backpack was stolen from a Robinson Rd address on December 29 and also that night golf clubs, a handbag, a phone and alcohol were stolen from a Buffalo Beach Rd address.”

On the roads it has also been relatively quiet, with police called to one vehicle crash and arresting one drunk driver this week.

On December 29, police apprehended a 31-year-old Hamilton woman for drunk driving after returning a blood alcohol reading of 487mcg. The new limit is 250mcg.

'While on December 25, a driver lost control of his car and crashed into a fence on SH25, Kuaotunu. Thankfully only minor injuries resulted,” says Andrew.
