Decontamination work at Tauranga City Council's Willow Street headquarters has continued over the festive period – but some staff may have to wait until the end of January to be rehoused.
The work, carried out by council staff alongside a team from Downer, is in response to the discovery of toxic black mould in the building earlier this month.
Decontamination work at the council's HQ has continued over the Christmas and New Year period.
A number of staff have been relocated to various temporary locations while council finalise staff accommodation for the medium-term, which they estimate at six-to-nine months.
However, the exact medium-term is yet to be determined, and assessing the extent of the remedial work required to make the building weather-tight is expected to take six-to-eight weeks.
In the interim period, council have secured floor space in the old Westpac building situated at 2 Devonport Road and the Star building at 127 Durham Street.
The two sites combined will accommodate approximately 180 staff and the authority is also in negotiations for additional floor space within the Tauranga CBD.
It is expected staff will be settled into their medium-term workspaces by the end of January 2015.

At what cost?

Council is extraordinary quiet about the financials involved. This may well take a long time to resolve. Leaky building syndrome is a massive job - find and fix, then remediation. Big decisions will have to be made as to the long term viability of the building. As always, my view is that council do NOT need to be in the CBD, apart from library and front counter. Move out from the CBD, lease an industrial building, sell the CBD land, that will help pay debts. Many large companies don't want to own their buildings for these reasons. Is TCC merely another large company? Time for a rethink councillors!

You mean like Trustpower did / are doing?
earlybird...there is a difference...

And the difference is that Trustpower are a privately owned company with total autonomy over their location and business dealings...TCC of course is a totally funded organisation by the ratepayer with (at least theoretically) the need for public support and agreement. I agree with big ted and believe the decision will be to rebuild whatever the outcome, good or bad...so, to where?..well moving to perhaps Baypark or Tauriko Estate may well be a suitable alternative, after all, tourists and visitors do not flock to Tauranga to visit the Council Building, but they probably would for a bright new Hotel and Convention centre on the same site wouldn't they?

I have posted in this medium before that I believe that the decision by Trustpower to move to the CBD is flawed. The CBD will be more and more a backwater, as we no longer have to visit the bank, post office, lawyer etc because of the internets modern communication. Even retail is suffering. At best we may go the CBD to eat.

Well I guess time will tell which of us is right, but I can't help thinking that removing large employers from the CBD will just speed up its demise. Think of all the cafes etc that largely rely on CBD workers to make a living. Take away the workers and you're left with what? I wonder what the retailers think.

Firstly, council have a canteen that is used by most staff, as it is far cheaper than a café outside. Secondly TCC have never supported CBD retailers (despite saying the contrary). e.g. parking fees and rate rebates. They are even ticking off large retail complexes out of the CBD!
Cozzie Building sits empty!

The ratepayers white elephant $7/8 million sits idle and available for TCC staff that genuinely require relocating - It's the former Mount Cozzie Club! Absolutely NO need for a CBD location. I look forward to the 'hidden agenda' being exposed sooner rather than later as NO rational decision maker undertakes this 'Ebola Type' response to one suspected employee having a respiratory issue and a handful of others wondering if their typical winter ills are in some way 'damp / mould' influenced.

The Cozzie Club total cost TCC ratepayers about $25 million of new debt for no genuine purpose.

Yes you are right on that, it is still empty. Did you vote for that white elephant, it all fits with the type of nonsense you would vote for?
CBD v Mount?

Actually I think the best place for TCC staff is a barn adjacent to Route K, so long as there is a toll to be paid by TCC staff to get to and from work, no freebees then it would be fantastic.
