Seeing in the New Year

The last day of 2014 is here and people are getting ready to see in the New Year in style.

But remember, roads will be closed around the city today as stages are set up ready for the big countdown.

The Mount is ready for the New Year celebrations.

The Mount peninsula, north of Banks Ave and Salisbury Ave, started to close to traffic from 2pm this afternoon, and will re-open at 8am on New Year's Day.

Only people with vehicle passes will be able to drive through the road cordons. Vehicle passes have been mailed to property owners.

People staying within the road closure zone who haven't received a vehicle pass can get one from the Park ‘n' Ride on Kawaka Street to people with proof of address.

The free Park ‘n' Ride option is for people to take a bus into the event zone from now until until 2am on New Year's Day.

Bayline Coaches are running a $15 bus service, with pick up locations around the city. Grab a summer passport for timetables or check out: www.baylinebus.co.nz

Tickets are available from the bus driver (cash only), Bayline Coaches, the i-site Visitor Information Centre on Willow Street, Golden Grove Holiday Park, Papamoa Beach Grove Holiday Park and Papamoa Beach Top 10 Holiday Resort.

Bay Hopper buses stopped going into the road closure area after 1pm this afternoon.

Passengers will be dropped near the free Park ‘n' Ride, which will take passengers into the road closure area. Normal Bayhopper bus services will resume on January 1.

Until January 5, the liquor-free zone in Mount Maunganui includes all public areas north of Grove Avenue, plus Totara, Puriri, Tawa Street and Phoenix Lane.

Liquor, glass or fireworks aren't allowed into the event zone. Bags will be searched at road cordons and at events entry points. Maps are available in the summer passport.
