Bumper year for BOP on Honours list

A host of figures from industries across the region have been recognised on the 2015 New Year Honours list.

Local developer Paul Adams has been awarded the esteemed title of Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and philanthropy, while former MP Tony Ryall has also been commended.

Former MP Tony Ryall has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

The ex-Bay of Plenty politician has been made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services as a Member of Parliament. Tony, who lives in Ohope, retired in September after 24 years as a National Party MP.

Paul has contributed to a number of organisations and developments throughout a career that spans 30-plus years, with beneficiaries including Waipuna Hospice, Tauranga Boy's College and Elms Mission House.

Tauranga's Alan Bickers has been named a Member of the Order for services to the community after his involvement in a range of projects over the past 40-years. Alan oversaw the redevelopment of Holy Trinity Church and has been chairman of the Building Practitioners Board since 2005.

Elsewhere, Te Puke couple Geoff and Gill Brann have been honoured for their services to forestry and the community, receiving the Queen's Service medal in recognition of their work at their Roydon Downs site.

ISO managing director Greg Dickson has been named a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit following his contribution to the cargo logistics industry, while the same award has been handed to Pyes Pa academic Jens Mueller for services to business and education.

Former Te Puke teacher Berys Marie Ross has been honoured with a Queen's Service Medal for services to the community, as has Jennifer Vanstone, who has co-ordinated the town's Daffodil Day fundraiser for over 20 years.

Tauranga man Jeremy Whimster has been recognised for services to music and former Bay of Plenty regional councillor Ian Noble has received his honour for services to farming and the community.

These "honours" don't mean a thing. For all Tony Ryall boasts how much he has improved the health system it just as bad if not worse in many areas. Waiting lists have been reduced - joke ! Cancer treatment is obtainable quicker - This area has always been pretty good from personal experience anyway and this goes back 13 years to early this year. So in my opinion many of these "honours" are not worth the paper they are written on.
