Diesel spill near Wairoa Bridge

Emergency services were called upon to deal with a diesel spill in Te Puna this morning after a tanker started leaking.

Fire services were contacted at around 6.15am by the driver of a 3000-litre tanker that had started spilling diesel on State Highway 2 near Wairoa Bridge.

Fire officers were called early this morning after a diesel spill in Te Puna.

'It had sprung some sort of leak,” says northern fire communications shift manager Scott Osmond.

'We sent two appliances from Tauranga and they managed to plug up the leak before assisting with tidying up the spilt diesel.”

Fire crews were on the scene for less than an hour before the roading authorities took charge of the clean up.

'We don't know exactly how much diesel was spilt,” adds Scott, 'but it was quite a few litres.

'It was some sort of small commercial tanker. Environment BOP were advised and they were on the scene as well.

'It hasn't reached any drains or anything like that. We put some dirt around it to make sure it didn't escape and the road didn't need to be closed.”
