Stabbing accused in custody

The 36-year-old accused of stabbing a person during an incident on Ohauiti Road on Sunday morning has been granted interim name suppression.

Police applied for name suppression when the Tauranga man appeared in Tauranga District Court this morning charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A Tauranga man accused of stabbing another person has been remanded in custody by consent.

The man's lawyer, Paul Mabey, QC, agreed with the name suppression application stating his client 'remains a suspect in a homicide and any publication of name or photograph could jeopardise his defence”.

'Identification may also be an issue and the police investigation is still in its early stages,” Paul said in court this morning.

Judge Peter Rollo granted the application and remanded the accused in custody without plea until December 16.

The man was arrested overnight following an investigation into a stabbing in Ohauiti over the weekend.

The victim sustained minor stab wounds and has since been discharged from hospital.

Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate the death of 19-year-old Takena Tiepa-Ranapia after his body was discovered on Mansfield Street on Sunday.

A post-mortem revealed Takena was a victim of an assault prior to his death. Police are not commenting on the nature of his injuries as the investigation continues.

Police are urging anyone with information, no matter how irrelevant it may seem, to come forward.

Police are particularly interested in the movements of a maroon four-door Ford Laser Sedan in the Tauranga and Mount Maunganui areas between midnight and 1am.

Anyone with information that might assist the homicide investigation is asked to contact Tauranga Police on: 07 577 4300.

Information can also be provided anonymously to the Crimestoppers line on: 0800 555111.
