Rally to raise funds for CanSurf

Get your motor running and head out on the highway to Waihi Beach for the first ever CanSurf Motorcycle Rally this Saturday.

The goal of the rally is to raise funds for next month's CanSurf weekend camp which provides a unique beach experience for CanTeen members.

CanTeen is a national peer support network established to support, develop and empower young people living with Cancer in New Zealand.

CanSurf organising committee member Anna Schroeder says the weekend camps started in November of last year and involved 19 CanTeen members aged 13 to 24.

'We hold the weekend camps to give CanTeen members the opportunity to enjoy the activities, entertainment and hospitality down here at Waihi Beach.

'This year our goal is to offer 60 places, so we'd pay for 50 CanTeen members and 10 volunteers to come to the beach.”

This Saturday will be broken into three parts – the motorcycle rally in the morning, followed by a gourmet gala held in the afternoon, and finishing up with an after party that night.

This Saturday's CanSurf Motorcycle Rally will follow the Mini-Coromandel Loop.

Departing Waihi Beach at 8am, the rally follows the Mini-Coromandel loop and upon their return a motorbike show will be held to celebrate the best bikes in the rally.

From 11am to 3pm the Waihi Beach Community Centre will host a gourmet gala featuring local fresh food stalls, live entertainment and fundraising activities like Harley Rides Raffles, and much more.

Then at 7.30pm the after party kicks off at the community centre and it'll be jam packed with live entertainment, a licensed bar and food. There is space for up to 400 people.

'We're putting on a really good event and hope it will encourage the community to get behind the CanTeen guys and the CanSurf weekend.”

CanTeen member Lydia Weaver who attended last year's weekend camp says it was an amazing experience.

She learned how to surf and is now happily hooked. Lydia says it is the best event and camp she has ever been too.

'The thing that stood out for me the most was that the whole town came together just for a bunch of kids who have been through so much.

'This meant so much to me and I loved this experience so much,” says Lydia.

The inaugural CanSurf Motorcycle Rally is on at Waihi Beach this Saturday, October 18, from 8am.

Registration for the motorcycle rally costs $25 per person and can be done on the day or through the Event Finder website. Tickets to the after party costs $20.
