Wild weather forces claims rise

Insurance claims soared over the weekend along with all of the roofs. Rural insurance company FMG is working around the clock to deal with the 87 claims called in since the weekend from the Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Pukekohe regions.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council candidate Tim Short was a victim of the storm at the weekend, although he is in good spirits about the damage, "I really should invest in a roof rack for those big firewood jobs."

The latest weather comes on top of the work FMG are assessing from earthquakes, snow storms and high winds around the country over the past few weeks.
Bay of Plenty regional sales manager Liz Quenby says the claims cover power outages, roofs blowing off through to milk being unable to be collected.
"If we hadn't of had the earthquake this would be a significant day," says Liz.
Brian Bayer from Te Puke estimates about a third of his hydroponic lettuces have been damaged by Friday's stormy weather.
"We have about 70,000 plants and I would say about a third of those have been damaged."
Brian says his green houses were blown from here to tomorrow "and then even further".
He says it will take a few days to assess the extent of the damage.
Continued bad weather could see further claims for the already pressed FMG.
