In wet, slippery Baypark conditions that forced 'old school' rugby to be played, including some 'argy-bargy' between substitute players at scrum time in the 64th minute, the Steamers piled on the points, scoring six tries on their way to a 41-13 win against the Manawatu Turbos.
Three of these were scored in the first half leading to a halftime score of 20-6 with a brace of tries to prop Tristan Moran and one for centre Cory Aporo.
The first try was scored in the 27th minute by Moran following a strong period of pressure and on the back of 13 phases. It was only a few minutes later when he crossed for the double after the Steamers mauled their way to the line.
At this stage the score was 13-3 to the Steamers, with Mike Delany having kicked one penalty, but missing both conversions and Manawatu having slotted one penalty.
A mid-air collision soon after the kickoff following the second Moran try resulted in a penalty for Manawatu, with Cory Aporo told that he needed to be more careful when challenging for the aerial ball.
Just mimutes later Aporo made amends for the three points conceded from that penalty and dotted down in the corner when chasing a magnificent grubber kick from Mike Delany.
At halftime most of the statistics showed a slight edge for the Steamers, but there was a clear advantage in the in-close game with the Steamers having played 12 pick-and-goes to the Turbos' five.
The second half started well for the Steamers as they collected a bonus point in the first five minutes when winger Lelia Masaga, after a quiet first half, ran with strength at the Manawatu try line to dot down while shrugging off tacklers. This took the score to 27-6 with the conversion made.
The Steamers continued to exert pressure with their forwards holding the ball and steadily driving up the field, supported ably by the boot of Mike Delany. Their efforts were rewarded in the 53rd minute with a try to lock Culum Retallick, making the score 34-6.
Manawatu was able to score a late try to bring the score to 34-13, but the Steamers weren't happy not to have the final say and Grant McQuoid ran in a try to make the full time score 41-13.
The bonus point win for the Steamers put them into eighth in the ITM Cup standings, although the Thursday night game was the first of round eight, so this placing is tenuous pending the rest of the weekend's games.
