A world record involving toilet paper will be attempted for the first time in Kawerau on September 14.
Prideaux Park will host a giant marquee and almost 10,000 rolls of toilet paper as Kawerau residents attempt Record Setter World Records ranging from the fastest time to unravel a toilet roll to balancing the tallest tower of toilet rolls on one hand.
Almost 10,000 loo rolls will be used in a world record attempt in Kawerau next month.
Practice events for the world record attempt will take place at Kawerau Woodfest.
Attempts are made following strict guidelines available online at Recordsetter.com and after official attempts are uploaded through the official website and reviewed by the moderation team at Record Setters.
If the attempt is deemed to be successful then the official video is released online as the next Record Setter World Record holder to be challenged by anyone in the world.
The Purex Record Setter World Record Games at Kawerau Woodfest will be the first ever event in the world to specifically focus on world record attempts using the Purex toilet roll.
Kawerau Woodfest Director Lee Barton says Kawerau Woodfest has always been about celebrating the local industry. 'We already have iconic attractions such as the aie pacific Toyota Big Dig World Champs and KFL Pro Logger Races which incorporate wood chip and logging but there was nothing in place for the manufacturers of toilet tissue paper.
'After wracking my brain for months and months of how we could celebrate SCA's (now Asaleo Care's) prominence in the region, I had a eureka moment and was gob smacked to discover that people were actually setting the craziest of world records by just using toilet roll paper.”
Lee says after the expansion of the factory in Kawerau it became even more important to celebrate Asaleo Care and Purex' position in the market place and there is no better time to do that than during Woodfest.”
'Boyed by this momentous discovery I approached Mark Kennedy with a proposal to place Kawerau as the number one toilet roll record breaking venue in New Zealand and potentially the world. To my absolute pleasure he agreed and now we await the games.
'It really is all about having a bit of fun with loo roll and if we can get some world records broken -even better. It is just a cheeky little idea that will hopefully have people cracking up as they hold onto the seat of their pants with fits of giggles.”
The project also has another twist with young people from the Team Tarawera Raft crew, aiming to represent NZ in Brazil this October at the R4 World Rafting Champs, volunteering to help co-ordinate the games.
The young people assisting with the Purex Record Setter World Record Games have teamed up with Lester Murfitt and other staff from Asaleo Care to deliver the carefully selected Record Setter activities and are hoping members of the public will kindly donate towards their fundraising to attend the Rafting Champs.
The specific world records to be targeted will be posted on the official Woodfest webpage for people to begin their own training programmes.
The Saturday of Woodfest will be an official practice and training day, whilst Sunday, September 14, is the Record Setter World Record day.
This means that Sunday will be when World Record attempts will be officially recorded. Cash prizes will be up for grabs for those that set new National Records and new World Records, if broken and moderated to be credible.
