Pair in court over 'car surfing'

Two men charged with dangerous driving after a man was filmed 'car surfing” on a Cortina through Matua streets have appeared in court.

Adam Robert Findlay, 24, and Nicholas Scott Hugh Funnell, 24, appeared in Tauranga Registrar's Court where the case was adjourned for two weeks to allow them to seek legal advice.

Footage of one of the men 'car surfing' down Levers Road on a Cortina.

Findlay is accused of driving the vehicle, while Funnell is alleged to have been the person 'car surfing” on the back.

Both men handed themselves into Tauranga Police after footage of the incident was posted on SunLive on Tuesday morning.

The footage entitled ‘Car Surfing in Tauranga' was filmed by a passenger travelling in a vehicle behind the Cortina and was posted to You Tube on Sunday.

The video shows a car driving along Otumoetai Road before going through the Ngatai Road roundabout and onto Levers Road while a man balances on the boot.

It's estimated the car was travelling at 60km/h in a 50km/h area. Read more about the incident here.

Police earlier described the actions as "stupid and reckless" and condemned the actions.
