A review of the Global Temperature chart [Cliff Harris /Climatologist & Randy Mann /Meteorologist] for the past 410,000 years shows that our 'mother earth” had no difficulty correcting these variances as they occurred. However this charted information does show that whenever Solar Irradiation decreased and Volcanic activity increased Global temperatures suddenly plummet.
With the volcanic activity we have experienced recently in Iceland and the Pacific and with no reported Sun Flares we could reasonably expect a sudden reduction it atmospheric temperatures in the immediate future.
If history is a guide it could take nature 3 to 4 years to correct this situation .
Peter Otway's recent comment on the rapid melt of 'sheet ice” misses the more significant measure of Glacier melt.
Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, official map shows the Grand Pacific Glacier which extends inland 60 miles to the Canadian border.
When Captain Vancouver discovered this bay in 1750 and Captain Cook in 1780 the glacier was at the mouth of the bay. Progressively from 1790 to 1907 the glacier retreated almost to the Canadian border. By 1925 it retreated to 2 miles over the border. By 2002 and at the present time it is back to a mile inside the Alaskan border. Hardly the result of our present day lifestyle !!
ETS…. Carbon, the Earth's most abundant Element and the processes of 'The Carbon Cycle” in, on, and around the Earth's surface are vital to the continuation of life on earth as we know it.
Carbon in it's many forms from solid; powder; liquid; gas; etc; follows a continuous path from the Earth's mantle to surface; oceans; plants; animals; humans; atmospheres and back through a reverse cycle to the earths surface and mantle again.
Mankind's present activities are effecting this cycle to some extent and Al Gore saw an opportunity to correct this situation but, sadly, missed his way and has turned his cause into nothing more than a 'commodity trading” exercise.
Our attempts to feed an ever increasing world population are creating 'blockages” in the Carbon Cycle.
Millions of people in the Western world dying of obesity and millions in third world countries dying of starvation.
Our oceans are a vital part of the carbon sink from the atmosphere where carbon combines to form sea food for fish. We have grossly overfished the cod fisheries of the North sea and the North Atlantic. We have all but destroyed the Tuna fisheries of the south east Pacific. This hampers the ability of the oceans to absorb carbon.
Our rivers are so polluted that washed down limestone is difficult for our shell fish to grow and flourish. Very evident in the Asian, Mediterranean and East coast of the USA locations.
Third world countries, in their attempts to produce more food are destroying the rain forests which are our major 'vegetation” carbon sink.
Go into a Western World restaurants and see the servings of food being provided.. time and again 50% of it is sent back to the kitchen as waste.
We have the technology to put these things right but there are too many looking solely for the 'Trading opportunity” rather than opportunities to help put our carbon cycle back into a balance.
Mother Earth will do it in her own time but if we do not give her our co-operation we may not be here to see it.
