Labour Party list announced

Labour candidates for Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty electorates for this year's general election have claimed ranking spots of 25 and 50 on the party's list.

The opposition party announced its final list for this year's election on September 20 this afternoon.

Dr Rachel Jones and Clare Wilson are ranked 25 and 50 respectively on the Labour Party list.

Labour candidate for Tauranga Rachel Jones is ranked at number 25, while BOP candidate Clare Wilson sits in the number 50 spot of the 64 that made the list.

Rachel, a small business owner who has a double PhD in Management Communication and English Literature, is one of a number of newcomers on the party list. Others include Rotorua candidate Tamati Coffey, at number 30, and policy analyst Priyanca Radhakrishnan, who comes in two spots ahead of Rachel at 23.

It is understood the Labour Party will need at least 32 per cent of the party vote for Rachel to get in on the list.

The Labour Party currently has 34 seats in Parliament made up of 22 electorate seats; and 12 list seats gained when the party polled 27.48 per cent of the party vote at the 2011 General Election.

National polled 47.31 per cent of the party vote gaining 17 list seats, along with 42 electorates giving it a total of 59 seats.

At number 25, Dr Rachel Jones believes she has a good shot at gaining a seat in Wellington and says it will almost 'ensure there will be a Labour MP in Tauranga after the election”.

'The real winner in this is Tauranga,” says Rachel.

'My high ranking shows Labour's commitment to Tauranga. We are the largest NZ city without a Labour MP and this is recognition that the people of Tauranga who support progressive politics deserve representation.

'I am very privileged to be the person, who potentially benefits from Labour's renewed focus on the regions.

'The best thing about having a high position is that it means a party vote for Labour in Tauranga really counts this election.”

Rachel says the Labour team will be out in the community letting people know a vote for Labour will help bring an MP into Parliament.

'A vote for Labour will help bring them an MP who will advocate on behalf of those who have suffered under the policies of the current government – the workers, families, and those struggling to own their own home.”

In announcing the list leader David Cunliffe said he is delighted with fantastic array of talented candidates who have made it onto our list”.

'The skills, energy and positivity which they bring shows the excellent health, which our Party is in. Those candidates will be out each day promoting our messages on jobs, homes and families, and I look forward to joining them on the campaign trail.”

The list of 64 people comprises 30 men and 34 women. A further 21 people - 16 men and five women - are standing only for electorates.

Philosophy lessons

What a shame Rachel Jones doesnt have a double phd in philosophy to go with her other titles- she may then recognise the immorality of the Labour party and their threat to individual rights. It should be mandatory that All the different GANGS of people who think destroying the rights of the minority - take a course in philosophy (especially as it is omitted from the govt run school curriculum)
