Chiefs make Boys’ College run

Tauranga Boys' College First XV will have some formidable yet friendly training partners when they take part in a special training run with defending Super Rugby champions the Chiefs tomorrow.

Organised by sponsor Generation Homes, the two side's skills and drills session, between 9.30 and 10.30am at the school's Nicholson Field, is part of the franchise's day-long visit to the Bay of Plenty.

The Super Rugby side is currently on break from the round robin stage of the championship due to the three-week June international test window with the All Blacks facing England.

The last time the Chiefs visited the school was in 2012 before playing at Baypark Stadium.

Among the players will be former Tauranga Boys' College students Tanerau Latimer and Nathan Harris.

'It's great to have the Chiefs hold a training session at my old school,” says Latimer.

'A few of the Chiefs boys went to this school so you always really enjoy being able to come back.”

The opportunity comes with the defending Super Rugby champions making their way to Tauranga after the Chiefs tri-match alongside the Bay of Plenty Wasps and Waikato Harlequins in Matamata tonight.

The triangular hit out sees the three teams play two 40 minutes halves, one against each side, in what is part of the ITM Cup selection process for Waikato and Bay of Plenty sides.

'The Chiefs region is where we have come from – this is our home ground,” says Generation Homes marketing manager Dave Andrew.

'We are proud to be giving back to the community where it all started for us, and look forward to bringing the Chiefs to Tauranga Boys' College.”

Following the training run in Tauranga, various players will be attending an assembly at Matua Primary School while the rest of the team will be at the Barbarian Fun Day at Paengaroa Domain from 11am to 1pm.

The second annual event sees 20 primary schools from throughout the Bay taking part in the 10 a-side tournament, playing three or four matches with local rugby legends on hand.

Past players involved with the barbarians team will link up with a school, helping them out with warm up and giving tips throughout the day.

There will be a free sausage sizzle for players put on by Eastern Districts Rugby Club and Chiefs members will be signing autographs and getting involved with the kids.

Games will kick off about 9.40am.
