Three Waikato clubs travelled north and left the ASB Chatham Cup ambitions of their Auckland opponents in tatters with a trio of third round upsets on Saturday.
Northern Regional League Division 2 leaders Tauranga City United AFC claimed the biggest scalp, tipping out 2008 competition champions East Coast Bays at Bay City Park with a 3-2 extra time victory.
The result was made more impressive as the visitors scored twice in extra time through Jerahl Hughes and Jordan Culpepper having finished the 90 minutes with only 10 men. Culpepper's 118th minute capper came from almost halfway.
At Fred Taylor Park, Hamilton's Melville United got a measure of revenge for a semi-final defeat to Waitakere City in 2013, edging the home side 1-0 thanks to a Shaun Kipara goal a minute before halftime as the Division 1 side turned over the Premier League west Auckland club.
The trio of Waikato wins was sensationally completed by Waikato Federation League 1 team Ngongotaha AFC who bundled out Northern Regional League Division 1 side Hibiscus Coast 3-2 at Stanmore Bay Reserve.
Zak Haua scored twice for the visitors in the upset win with Eamon O'Donoghue adding the other, overcoming two goals from Paul Langford.
Northern Regional Premier League side Onehunga Sports claimed the only all-Auckland tie, a 2-0 win coming at Phyllis Street Reserve over Division 1 Metro courtesy of goals from Josh Ming and Hoedemaker.
In the Central Region, things went according to plan for the Central League leaders Miramar Rangers saw off the challenge of Lower Hutt City – second from bottom – with a 2-1 win at Fraser Park.
Second half goals from Van Elia and Patrick Fleming provided the victory for the four-time ASB Chatham Cup champions despite a lovely freekick from Nathaniel Hailemariam.
Tawa AFC, third from bottom in the Central League claimed a fourth round berth with a 1-0 win over bottom side Upper Hutt City, Mike Ramaekers fifth minute strike proving the difference at Redwood Park.
In Christchurch, Andy Barton's first half brace put the holders into the fourth round hat as Cashmere Technical saw off the challenge of fellow Mainland Premier League side Halswell United 2-1 at ASB Football Park.
In the Football South Region, Dunedin Technical romped to an 11-1 win over South Canterbury Division 1 outfit Pleasant Point AFC at Tahuna Park.
Alistair Rickerby struck four times for the home side while Tom McBride added a hat-trick of his own. Player/coach Aaron Burgess came off the bench to score his 199th goal for the club's first team.
With their coach in Brazil, Otago University secured their fourth round berth with a 4-0 win over Northern Hearts AFC with Peter Rae scoring twice as all four goals came in the second spell.
On Friday night, 2010 runners-up Bay Olympic earned their place in the next round with a 2-1 win over Neil Emblen's Western Springs AFC side at Seddon Fields.
Daniel Jones and Darren White scored second half goals to see off a spirited effort from the Northern Regional League Division 1 side who pulled one back through Liam Mulrooney.
The fourth round of the ASB Chatham Cup takes place on the weekend of June 28-29 with the draw set to be made on Monday 16 June.
