Tauranga climbers are today spending the day on the ground after competing in the regional rock climbing event this weekend.

Hosted by The Rockhouse in Mount Maunganui, the event on Saturday saw a total of 62 competitors, of all ages, ascent walls as high as 10 metres tall.

Among the competitors were 20 Tauranga climbers, says organiser Izzi Hair.

'The competition was a huge success and the local kids held their own in the competition.”

Climbers were divided into different age categories, including under 12, under 14, under 16, under 18, opens and masters. Each age group had to complete three climbs, with males and females competing separately.

First place of the under 16 males category was awarded to 14-year-old Tauranga climber Kyle Underwood.

Twelve-year-old climbers Alex Blair and Jack Niles, also from Tauranga, placed second and third in the under 14 males category.

The female under 16 category was won by all Tauranga climbers.

Fifteen-year-old Reanna Inglis placed first, while fellow climber 13-year-old Irralee Hair came second and Adara Price, 15, placed third.

On the under 12 male podium was 10-year-old Tauranga climbers Dom Gordon and Kade Allen in first and third place.

The competition is the first of The Rockhouse's new club ‘The Ascenders' has hosted.
