Police are appealing for witnesses of a fatal crash in Te Puke on Sunday morning to come forward.
Senior Sergeant Stuart Graham says they are particularly keen to speak with a woman driver who is believed to have been following the Honda car before it crashed off a bridge in the township, killing a passenger and injuring five others.
The Honda is removed from below the bridge on Jellicoe St, Te Puke.
Senior Sergeant Graham says the driver of the Honda car travelling south on State Highway 2 lost control as he
approached the Ohineanganga bridge near Cameron Road. He crossed the centreline, crashed through steel barriers and plunged to the footpath about 4m below. The car landed on its roof.
The deceased was a passenger in the car and appeared to have been thrown from the vehicle as it hit the bridge. He was found beneath the car. Five other occupants were taken to Tauranga Hospital to be treated for non life-threatening injuries. A seventh occupant walked away uninjured.
"Police suspect speed and alcohol are factors in this crash and enquiries are continuing," says Stuart.
"Police also seek any other witnesses ... in particular a woman driver who we believe was following the Honda car prior to the crash."
Anyone with information should contact Tauranga Police.
