Organisers of Tauranga's Police CIB Charity Auction will hang up their gavels at the completion of this year's 20th event on October 17.
Auction founder Detective Sergeant Pete Blackwell has announced that this year's auction, raising money for Western Bay of Plenty charities, will be the final one.
This year will be the last Tauranga Police CIB Charity Auction.
Last year, the auction raised $280,000 for seven local charities.
Pete says while it is an end of an era, the Tauranga Police CIB Charitable Trust has agreed to finish on a high note.
'I think timing is important and that nothing lasts forever and the time is right. We are going out at the top of our game, on our terms.
'It's like a death in the family in some ways; this has been a major part of my life.”
Founded by Pete 20 years ago, the Trust is made up of Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner, Glenn Cotterill, Leona and Graeme Smith, John Mathewson of Air NZ, Sergeant Nigel McGlone and Judge Paul Geoghegan.
Collectively, they share a vision for improving the local community, particularly for children and youth.
The auction started in 1995 by raising $200 and has grown in to a multi-million dollar monster of a charity event.
Pete says it will be a strange once it's all over.
'We have achieved magnificent results over the years for the benefit of thousands of local children and young people in our community. This is the year when we will exceed $2 million.”
One of the highlights of this year's event for Pete will be having all four of his children attend for the first time.
Half of the tickets have already been sold, so Pete warns people to get in fast.
'We are always on the hunt for some big ticket items and invite people to donate quality items for the auction.
'We have a couple of things we are waiting confirmation on, as well as some holiday packages and two signed guitars, held back from last year's auction.”
Pete says the amazing support of the community during the auction's 20 year run is second to none.
'Their giving is amazing. The success is attributed to us all. It's incredible.
'I look forward to coming up for air. Taking a break and looking at other options in the future.”
Charities wishing to benefit from this year's luncheon have until June 30 to apply.
