Hunter winched from bush

The 58-year-old Northland man missing in the Te Urewera National Park since Thursday has been winched from the bush by the BayTrust Rescue Helicopter.

The hunter was one of seven men flown into the bush, east of Galatea, on Monday. He was reported missing on Thursday afternoon after he failed to return to their campsite.

The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter winched the injured hunter to safety.

The BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called in this morning to winch the hunter to safey after he was located by search and rescue teams with a suspected fractured knee.

Duty pilot Art Kowalski says the hunter was found near the Kaitawa Stream, about 4km east of Midway Hut.

'He had suffered a fall and a dislocated knee and was unable to walk out due to the injury and steep terrain.

'The Rescue Helicopter was able to winch the man from the rugged bush and he was flown to Rotorua Hospital for medical treatment.”
