Knights prepare for fiery clash

The Northern Knights are aiming to add a second domestic trophy to their cabinet for the summer when they take on the Wellington Firebirds in the Ford Trophy final at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval.

After dispatching the Canterbury Wizards by four wickets in their preliminary-final at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the side win the advantageous right to host tomorrow's final.

The Knights have already tasted success this summer lifting the HRV Cup T20 trophy for the first time and booking their ticket to the lucrative Champions League Twenty20 later this year.

And the Blackcaps early exit from the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh means the side is bolstered by the return of Anton Devcich and Trent Boult.

The side is unable to call on the services of other Blackcaps Kane Williamson, Corey Anderson and Tim Southee.

Williamson is flying directly to the United Kingdom to take up his county contract with Yorkshire, Anderson dislocated his finger in the World Twenty20 and faces a recovery of about a month, while it was felt that Southee would benefit from a brief rest after a long season before he takes off to fulfil his IPL commitments.

Boult and Devcich will force at least two changes to the Knights team for the season's finale but first-year coach James Pamment is understandably excited to have two of his internationals returning as they chase their second title for the season.

'We have built a strong feeling amongst the group throughout this short campaign, but that will only be added to by the inclusion of Trent and Anton. They are two outstanding people who bring so much to any team they are in,” says Pamment.

The Knights will wait until tomorrow to trim their squad from 14 to the starting 11, allowing Boult and Devcich to prove they are ready to play, as well as assess the Bay Oval wicket.

If included in the final side, seamer Graeme Aldridge will become the most capped Northern Districts player in one-day cricket, passing Robbie Hart's record of 122.

And the final stanza of the Ford Trophy, in effect the NZ Cricket One-Day championship, will bring home a number of players who have travelled the Bay of Plenty Cricket pathway.

Northern Knights skipper Daniel Flynn along with Graeme Aldridge, Jono Boult, Joe Carter, Brett Hampton and Bharat Popli are all Bay products while Williamson, Boult and Anderson have all worn the Knights strip this season.

The Ford Trophy final starts at 10.10am. Tickets are $10 for adults, and free for kids who attend with a paying adult, otherwise $5.
