College s pirate tale

Cowardly constables, swashbuckling pirates, beautiful daughters and a crazy major general – Aquinas College's 2009 production has it all.

The college is presenting Gilbert and Sullivan's much-loved musical, The Pirates of Penzance, at Baycourt from June 24-27.
Jacob O'Connor has a lead role as sergeant of police. It's a role he shouldn't have to research much, however, as both his father and grandfather were police sergeants - although Jacob hopes they weren't as bumbling as the character he portrays.
Jacob and 47 other Aquinas students perform with five students in the accompanying band and many more back stage.
Musical director Maria Colvin says this Gilbert and Sullivan musical is one of the most popular and enduring works of musical theatre, bursting with toe-tapping songs, romantic duets, entertaining lyrics and chaotic comedy. She describes it as ‘pure fun' for young and old.
The Aquinas version, principally sponsored by Legacy Trust and directed by Ben Hambling, is at Baycourt from June 24-27. Tickets from Baycourt Ticket Direct. There is a Saturday matinee and evening performances.
