Cooking with the best

Two celebrity chefs are showing off their skills by whipping up taste bud tantalising creations using fresh produce from the Tauranga Farmers Market.

The city's market is hosting the 2014 Farmers Market New Zealand Summer Producers Awards at Tauranga Primary School today giving market-goers a chance to see the nation's top farmer's market produce and products cooked up by celebrity chef Julie Biuso and Tauranga's Peter Blakeway.

Tauranga Farmers Market manager Trixie Allen says the weather is great and people are either bums on seats or bums on crates.

'They are really enjoying the demonstration.”

'We're hosting this segment of FMNZ's annual awards – these are held every year – and it's to recognise the producers throughout New Zealand, who attend farmer's markets.”

Celebrity chef Julie Biuso and Tauranga's Peter Blakeway were joined by Tauranga Boys' College hospitality students and FMNZ chairman Chris Fortune to judge the fresh produce entries from 9am-10am.

'The students here have mixed and mingled with the chefs and they have also been our runners in the market gathering product if the chefs needed it.”

Most of the award cooking happened behind closed doors, but the chefs moved outside at about 11am to start creating 'fresh, funky food” with the produce entered.

Producers will have to wait until July to find out if they've won, at FMNZ's annual awards and conference in Feilding.

Winners will receive free coverage in Tangible Media's ‘Taste' and ‘Good' magazines.
