Tauranga's Urban Dance crew ‘Hysteria' are proving they really are hip hop champions after taking out the 2014 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Hip Hop Dance Championships in Bethlehem.
The 2014 Hysteria crew consists of Te Puke locals Reign Tibble-Smallman and Olivea Brown, Papamoa's Kayle Stimpson, Teagan Meyer and Rylee Hoult, Tauranga's Kayla Gudsell and Mahnia McAllum-Taylor and Te Awamutu's MJ Neethling. Photo: supplied.
The win sees the junior crew qualify for the National Street Dance Championships in Auckland in May, where they will defend their national title after winning the competition in 2013.
It is the second year in a row the group has taken out the title.
Urban Dance performers were dominant in the regional competition, with their junior development crew ‘Impact' placing third and the varsity division winning crew, Suavé, made up of former Hysteria crew dancers from 2010-2013.
Four of those dancers attended World Hip Hop Championships with Urban Dance crews ‘Co'Lab' in 2012 or ‘Hysteria' in 2013.
Urban Dance director Sarah Martin says this is a huge showcase of talent in the Bay of Plenty and a true testament to the work undertaken across the last five years.
"Seeing the photo of the two winning crews containing all past or present Hysteria crew members was a rewarding and humbling experience,” says Sarah.
"So much emotion and hard work has been poured into those dancers over the last five years and to see the older dancers standing up as role models for the up and coming young ones is awesome.”
Urban Dance are looking forward to an exciting year ahead, intending to take crews to international competitions including, House of Champions in Brisbane at the end of June and World of Dance in Hawaii in December.
