A family is petitioning for naming rights to the road that will go through their privately owned land connecting to the Tauranga Eastern Link.

Frank and Cecilia James are the original owners of the land sold to create the road, and also own the land on either side. The couple say input in naming the new road was part of original land sale negotiations.
They wish to name the road – the extension of Sandhurst Drive through to the Mangatawa Interchange – James Drive, or failing that, Faulkner Drive or Coastlands Drive.
But Tauranga City Council is refusing the request - opting to make it a continuation of Sandhurst Drive. This week Frank and Cecilia's son Richard addressed the council's Community Development Committee saying his parents' request has been 'improperly refused”.
He says the road is a new road, not an existing road being renamed, and deserves a topical name relating to its past and future.
'A verbal agreement was made to suggest we could have the naming of this portion,” says Richard. 'Sadly for us it wasn't written into the documented agreement and the powers that be have indicated this option has been rescinded under Health and Safety.”
Growing up on the land, Richard says their neighbours were the Gravatts, the Dicksons, the Evans, Simpsons, Thompsons, and Taylors – and all have roads named after them.
James Drive is easily spelt, pronounced and remembered in line with council policy – and is different from James Cook Drive to not confuse to people or emergency services, he says.
TCC's naming policy is to give preference to names that reflect the identity of Tauranga, the historical significance of the area, the Maori and cultural influence, and people important to the area's history.
Sandhurst Drive fails those principles, say Richard.
'If glorifying a military school in the UK reflects local identity, I am puzzled. I would suggest it is actually perfect for offending the sensibilities of local Maori considering the history of Tauranga and the British militia's role in Gate Pa and Te Ranga.”
There will be a roundabout between the current Sandhurst Drive and the new road, creating a clear delineation. Richard argues there are many examples around Tauranga of differently named roads that lead into one another, such as Maranui St/ Papamoa Beach Road, Marine Parade/Ocean Beach Road, and Gravatt Road/Gloucester Road.

These folks should get the name they want. If he owned the land it would nice for them to be recognised. A very raw deal.
Shame on you TCC

Well, no surprises there eh? TCC is just another political body after all and obviously, just like the bigger powers that be - their word can't be trusted. The James family quite obviously had that land for years, and obviously those that wanted the land for roading were not averse to a bit of bribery, which they are now reneging on. I think it sucks and I feel for the family.

Yes they should have the Naming right to the new Road:) it's easy to spell!! and it was on their land! but yes it should have been written down on paper as word's don't really mean a thing this day's.

The news as presented shows the TCC in bad light. The weak health and safety reference sounds less than persuasive in renigging on a verbal commitment. Sandhurst is insesnsitive to our heritage and James Drive is in line with the precedent already established by TCC. I suggest the TCC reconsider the matter at the earliest possible time.

If naming rights was part of the negotiations, then TCC must grant their wishes.
it's their right.

It's just typical of this council, say one thing and do another. This family have owned the land that the new road is on and still own the land either side for a long time. It's only right that the council keeps it's promise to one of the original families and name it "James Road" and not after some Elitist Army School in England. by annoyed.

I agree as it was their land, they should have input into the naming of said road. Unacceptable behaviour from TCC. I agree with Sunny's comments also, however point out the treaty claims continue relying on undocumented Maori history and they have been very successful. A verbal contract or agreement still has it's merits. Comes down to the honesty and integrity of the parties involved.

Perhaps renaming all of Sandhurst Drive James Drive would be an appropriate mea culpa. After all these folks had a right to expect that the Council would honour its word. If Sandhurst has no local connection then James would be more suitable name anyhow.
Work it out.

I see the logic in continuing Sandhurst, but a sutable new road in the area needs to reflect the James family and local history. I'm sure we achieve both here.
Seriously...

What the heck has health and safety got to do with the naming of a Road????
GIVE THE JAMES' A BREAK!

Totally agree with Richard James. These honest hardworking farmers need a break for once! I bet they have paid thousands of $ in rates to TCC over the past 30 years and done the right thing. TCC shouldn't reneg on the "gentleman's agreement" verbal or not! show some respect to the locals. They've given up a part of their land for TCC to build the overpass, therefore I definitely agree that James Drive is a well deserved road name. We locals may seem a "minority" to TCC but shouldn't the "majority" rule? Do the right thing TCC and give "the people" a fair go!
Hold them to their word..

Bring NZTA in to the picture. They have a role to play. What a blinking sorry council we have. Shame on you all.
