Labour MPs touch down

Labour leader David Cunliffe and his shadow caucus are set for a 'busy” day of Tauranga City today as they sit down and discuss the party's vision and issues for the city.

Labour leader David Cunliffe is in Tauranga today meeting with city, business and iwi leaders.

David and 19 other Labour MPs are basing themselves at Tauranga's Wesley Centre for the day where they will meet with community groups, business leaders and iwi, as well as conducting their shadow caucus meeting.

MPs forming David's 'shadow cabinet” include deputy leader David Parker, Grant Robertson, Jacinda Ardern, Chris Hipkins, Annette King and Nanaia Mahuta.

Heading into the first of a number of meetings in a hectic schedule, the Labour leader says he is looking forward to his fleeting visit to the city, helping affirm the party's presence and showing they are here to make a difference, in the lead up to this year's general election.

David is the 14th leader of the Labour Party after former leader David Shearer resigned last August.

Also heading into the centre this morning are Tauranga City councillors Clayton Mitchell and John Robson with the community meeting first up on the agenda.

Nice of them to visit but Goff was the last one here when the Rena first began to leak... Must be election year and they've come to catch their latest parachute candidate before she too runs aground....
