Just after 11am on Sunday, the Rotorua-based BayTrust Rescue Helicopter was called to Okere Falls after a 26-year-old woman, who is visiting from Australia, injured her back while white-water rafting.
Rescue helicopter duty pilot Art Kowalski says the woman hurt her back when the raft, carrying her and her white-water rafting party, fell over a set of falls.
Ambulance staff could not reach the woman from the boat and she was pulled to safety by the First Sovereign Trust Rescue Winch.
The injured woman was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital with lower spinal injuries for further treatment and observation.

Ouch. I strained groin muscles going over the same falls in a rubber vessel. Not keen to do that again. My thoughts go out to the woman.
