Charity golf raises thousands

Organisers of BDO Charity Golf Tournament are thrilled with yesterday's turnout and the prospective $9000 raised for Variety Bash.

About 70 people showed up on Te Puke Gold Clubs green to have a go at gold while raising money for the charity.

Money raised from the charity golf tournament in Te Puke will go toward the Variety Bash to help disadvantaged children.

Event organiser Mark Hellyer says everything was great in all the key factors like the most amount of sunshine, the most amount of fun, people really got into the spirit of things, and the generosity of people.

'It just grows every year. It just positively ridiculous the amount of generosity people displayed on the day.”

In terms of fundraising Mark believes they may have raised between $8500 and $9000.

'It's not bad when you put it into perspective of this being a four hour event, which is a spectacular outcome when you only have about 70 people there.

'The objectives we have are that people have a great time and we raise as much money for disadvantaged children as we can.”

He says yesterday was just spectacular in terms of sponsors, with 13 hole sponsors - up 30 per cent from the year before.

'We are more than happy and Variety I think, once they find out on Monday, will be extremely stoked.

'It's just a wonderful effort for a bunch of people in the Bay of Plenty who just really got into behind it for the day.”

Mark hopes the event stretches a 10 year life span and not a three year one.
