$40k for rural communities

Two rural communities in the Western Bay of Plenty are among the recipients of BayTrust's latest funding round - receiving a combined $40,000.
Maketu School received $15,000 towards the cost of running its education extension programme, while Te Kura o te Moutere o Matakana Te Kotukutuku received $25,000 for a synthetic grass sports facility.

BayTrust has contributed $40,000 to Maketu School and Te Kura o te Moutere o Matakana Te Kotukutuku.

Maketu School principal Bill Reid says the funds will allow the school's 'Seeds for the Future' programme to continue and be extended into some new areas.
"It allows us to put a little icing on the education cake by making a whole range of activities more accessible for our students and school community."
Among the new or additional activities provided are a mini-surf school, hip-hop dance lessons and keyboard music lessons.

On Matakana Island, fundraising for the island's multi-user sports facility is now complete and the community is looking forward to playing tennis and netball on the synthetic grass surface by October.
Funding coordinator Aroha Armstrong says the sports have always been popular on the island, but until now, there have been no adequate courts to play on.
"It's difficult and costly to get over to the city to play these sports.
"Having our own facility will open up lots of opportunities for our children and also revitalise the inter-marae challenges that are so important to bringing the community together and promoting a healthy lifestyle."
