A Tauranga building firm is to pay a total of $30,000 after one of its workers fell from the roof of a Tauriko property.
Greenway Developments was ordered to pay $25,000 in fines and $5000 reparation by Judge Louis Bidois during sentencing in Tauranga District Court today.
Greenway Developments was fined in Tauranga District Court today.
The company was charged with one count under the Health and Safety in Employment Act of failing to take all practicable steps to ensure a contractor was not harmed while undertaking work.
The worker was injured when he fell from the roof of a garage being constructed in Tauriko in April, 2013.
He was assisting other people in securing a truss to the top plate of the garage when it slipped and he lost his balance, falling 3 metres onto the concrete floor.
The man suffered fractures to his left wrist and jaw.
Chief inspector of investigations Keith Stewart says there was no effective means of fall protection in place, and had there been, the worker may not have been injured.
'There is no excuse for any construction company not knowing its responsibility to make working at height safe,” says Keith.
'WorkSafe NZ has been running a wide and very active campaign to reduce injuries and death from falls.
'There is an Approved Code of Practice for working at height that is widely available and every construction company, whether working in the commercial or residential sectors, should be working to its terms.”
Keith says the injured worker and his colleagues were unnecessarily exposed to dangerous working conditions.
'It's fortunate the victim didn't suffer more serious injuries.”
