Bayfair backs kindy garden

The vegetable patch and garden of the Arataki Kindergarten is being irrigated by a new rain water irrigation system mainly thanks to Bayfair Shopping Centre.
The rainwater irrigation system is being used as an educational tool for the children to learn about water conservation.

Bayfair Shopping Centre management are hoping some of their enthusiasm for sustainable practice will rub off on the next generation.

'Nearly one billion people worldwide lack access to safe, clean water,” says Bayfair operations manager Steve Ellingford.
'We aim to teach the newest generation that water is a precious resource that is not infinite – it must be protected and conserved. We see this as a great way to encourage them and their families to find easy ways to reduce wastage.”
The Bayfair Shopping Centre and other local businesses paid for the rainwater system which can capture up to 4500 litres of rain water to nourish the garden and help the kids learn about saving the planet in the process.
Bayfair introduced a sustainable management strategy in-centre seven years ago, which has been responsible for Bayfair's waste costs dropping by 44 per cent, and it has established New Zealand's first waste-free food court, diverting more than 50 tonnes of food scraps each year to compost rather than landfill.
