Fierce competition is also expected at the beach and on the water as the annual Eastern Regional Masters Championships and the Thundercats get underway.

Tauranga's Cole Armstong tears around the track in yesterday's competition.

At Baypark, an all-star line-up of drifting and extreme sports will keep spectators thoroughly entertained, says organiser Brendon White.

(From those of us who were there yesterday, we advise you take a pair of sunnies - as it gets rather dusty!)

At the beach, the Eastern Regional Masters Championships sees many of the region's more mature surf lifesavers test their skills in traditional sand and ocean-based races at Mount Main Beach, beginning at 9am.

Omanu Surf Life Saving Club is the current Surf Life Saving New Zealand Masters Champions and Mount Maunganui Surf Club is the reigning Eastern Regional Masters champs.

Competitors range from 35 years old and above, with 84-year-old Sid Salek from Omanu expected to make an appearance.

Further down the beach, the Thundercats will be tearing through the surf in high-speed fashion at Tay St from 11am.

Tauranga racer Anthony Inskeep says this will provide spectacular viewing for the public, as boats rip across waves at speeds of up to 80km/h.
