Tauranga sailor wins cup

Tauranga sailor Cole Rippey has won the prestigious P-Class sailing event - the Tanner Cup - with a clean sweep taking six out of six races.

The cup was raced on Tauranga Harbour this week with 14-year-old Cole adding his name to a trophy previously held by New Zealand sailors like Chris Dickson, Russell Coutts, Craig Monk, Dean Barker and Jo Aleh, who have since become household names.

The Tanner Cup is an inter-provincial P-Class competition sailed annually. There were eight sailors in the six-race competition on Sunday and Monday.

The racing for this year's cup competition was started by Tauranga sailor Jimmy Gilpin, the only sailor to have won the Tanner Cup three times.

Cole's competition came from Kate Stewart from North Harbour, who has four seconds, a third, and a fourth. Northland sailor Jackson Keon is third, taking two second placings off Kate. He also had two thirds, a fourth and a fifth.
