Auckland author Glenda Kane hopes her new children's book, ANZAC Day Parade, will encourage conversations about the reality of war.
The story, told in rhyme, features an exchange between a young boy and an old returned serviceman on ANZAC Day.
"Did ya shoot them dead," asked the bright-eyed boy.
"Did it feel real cool to kill?"
With a voice bereft of joy, he sighed, "No son, it was no thrill."
ANZAC Day Parade, published by Puffin, is available at Paper Plus, Whitcoulls and independent bookstores, RRP $18.99.
