India win mini world cup

Indian themed St Thomas More claimed the Western Bay of Plenty Mini World Cup played at the Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui yesterday on Wednesday (13 November 2013).

Sixteen Western Bay Year five and six teams lined up to fight out the ninth edition of the Mini World Cricket Cup staged by Bay of Plenty Cricket.

After three rounds of play, St Thomas More and Green Park School who were wearing the mantel of South Africa, squared off for the 2013 Mini World Cup championship. Points were awarded for runs scored and wickets taken, with Greenpark batting first to finish the match with 58 points.

St Thomas More, went into bat with plenty of enthusiasm and finished their sixteen over's at the crease with 62 points, to annex the 2013 Western Bay Mini World Cup trophy. Niven Dovey shone with the bat for the winners with Adam Fowler taking three wickets.

Defending champions Pillans Point, playing as the West Indies rebounded from a narrow loss to Greenpark in the semi-finals, to defeat Mount Maunganui Primary, aka Sri Lanka, in the playoff for third place.

A surprise guest on the day was former Pillans Point pupil and current Black Cap Kane Williamson who was in great demand for photographic requests.

Best dressed prize went to Pillans Point School, showing real ingenuity top put together a Rastafarian style to their West Indies uniform. The Fair Play award was given to first time entrants Te Ranga School.
