UPDATED 3PM:Efforts to bring an end to fuel leaks from a sunken boat are proving successful with crews refloating the boat in a Bay in the Coromandel today.
The Hosanna, an 11-metre private pleasure boat, sunk in Wyuna Bay west of the Coromandel township about 3.30pm on Wednesday with reports of fuel leaking from the boat.
The 11-metre boat was refloated in Wyuna Bay today.
Waikato Regional Council spent this morning containing the 85 litres leaked from the boat with emergency response staff deploying booms.
Coromandel regional on-scene commander, Brendan Morris says pumps were used to refloat the vessel, owned by a Hamilton man, and the fuel leak was sealed this morning.
He says council was on the scene promptly and deployed booms to help contain leaking fuel by 5pm on Wednesday.
There are hopes the fuel that did leak from the boat will have minimal environmental impact.
The plan now is for council staff to monitor the boat in place till Saturday when it is due to be removed by the owner.
'Any sinking and fuel leak of this type is unfortunate but we have been able to respond promptly and work with the owner to resolve the situation as far as we can at this stage."
It is unclear at this stage why the vessel sank.
