Tweeting on the beat

Bay of Plenty Police are readying their thumbs for the second annual Tweet-a-thon tomorrow where they will pound the Twitter-sphere with the day's events.

The day-long event aims to engage the public through social media and provide an insight into officers' experiences on the frontline.

Police will be taking part in the international Tweet-a-thon on Friday.

It will also showcase the work general duties police, search and rescue teams, neighbourhood policing teams, dog handlers and highway patrol teams do on a daily basis.

@BOPPolice, @ManukauPolice and @BetterWorkStory will be taking part using the hashtags #poltwt and #nzpolice.

Public affairs general manager Karen Jones says NZ Police actively use social media to spread prevention advice, make communities safer and to build trust and confidence through online community engagement.

'This event is a fantastic way to give the public a window into our world, as well as to gain an understanding of differences between New Zealand and other jurisdictions around the globe.

'We are looking forward to getting involved in an even bigger tweet-a-thon tomorrow.”

The first international Tweet-a-thon in March saw more than 200 police jurisdictions from 10 countries come together to share experiences from their day-to-day roles.

The #poltwt hashtag became a trending topic in five countries.

NZ was the first country to begin the Tweet-a-thon and several local tweets and photos were shared around the world.

@BOPPolice will be tweeting from early tomorrow afternoon on a late shift.
