Front runners at yachting awards

Three Tauranga sailors are being awarded for their outstanding performances with honours in this year's Yachting New Zealand Awards.

Sailors Peter Burling, Jason Saunders and Molly Meech each receive performance awards following a successful international season. Molly also receives a youth performance award.

Jason Saunders and Peter Burling both receive performance awards in this year's Volvo Yachting Excellence Awards.

The 2013 awards mark the 50th anniversary of the year in which the New Zealand Sailor of the Year was first ever presented.

Just who will be presented the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy in this milestone year will be announced on Friday, November 29 at the 2013 Volvo Yachting Excellence Awards at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland. Back in 1963 it went to Harry Highet, designer of the iconic P-Class yacht.

On November 29 the Orbit Corporate Travel Sailor of the Year, Volvo Young Sailor of the Year, B&G Coach/Official of the Year and the President's Award will all be revealed.

This year there is also a one off award, the Partridge Jewellers Diamond Anniversary Prize included in the programme marking and celebrating the 50th anniversary.

Ten performance awards, nine service awards, seven youth performance awards as well as the winner of the 2013 Emerging Talent Award were announced yesterday.

In both the performance and service categories no more than 10 awards can be given in one year and 2013 was no exception in providing the judging panel with some tough decisions.

The other Tauranga sailors missed in the article but also receiving awards are Sam Barnett and Zak Merton and Sam Meech who along with Peter Burling and Jason Saunders was part of the NZL Sailing Team with ETZ that won the Youth America's Cup.
