Tauranga organisations are making a joint bid with the Waikato region to have ultra-fast broadband installed in the Bay of Plenty and Waikato.
The bid is being pushed by Economic development agency Priority One in partnership with Tauranga City Council, Environment Bay of Plenty and regional businesses Velocity and WEL Networks.
Priority One project manager Greg Simmonds says the organisations applied to the government's Ultra Fast Broadband Fund and hope to hear back by June.
He believes the bid was very strong but says it is hard to determine if they will be successful.
If the bid is approved, ultra fast broadband will be rolled out in Tauranga and Hamilton first.
It will spread to other areas of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty over time.
"There's been no time frame given by government. They are after a good quality result rather than rushing it."

What exposure will ratepayers have to this infrastructure project, I wonder?
