UPDATED 7.30am: A car collided with a log on the highway at the Whakatane turn-off near Paengaroa, trapping two people in the vehicle.
Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of State Highway 2 and 33 east of Te Puke just after 4pm.
A white Honda and logging truck have collided on SH33.
Emergency services at the scene of the crash.
At no point did the car connect with the logging truck, a Te Puke St John Ambulance spokesman says today. The logs came off the logging truck, and the vehicle struck those logs.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Tania Matthews says the driver of the car was lightly trapped.
She says there were two people in the car, who are both believed to have suffered moderate injuries.
'There are logs all over the road and some on the railway track.
'The road is blocked and police are putting diversions in place.”
The driver of the green logging truck is believed to be out of the cab.
A reporter at the scene says the white Honda hatchback has suffered damage to the front of the vehicle. The logging truck is now parked on the side of the highway.
Police have closed the road at the Whakatane turn-off on SH2. The road remains open to traffic through on SH33.
NZTA advises diversions are in place down Mckenzie Road off SH33 at Paengaroa and Wilson Road South to SH2 for northbound traffic.
Motorists are being asked to drive carefully and be patient until the road is cleared.
The police commercial vehicle investigation unit has also be called to the scene.

How many trucks have to have an accident before someone cracks down on their speed. I travel between Rotorua and the Mount often and the trucks are the worst for speeding and aggressive driving. Mind you there are a few who are exceptional drivers. Crack down on their speed I say.

I am sick of you clowns who keep clapping on about truck drivers. Are you intimidated by them? They travel many more thousands of KM per year than average drivers and have far less accidents on a per km travelled basis. Get your facts str8 first before bemoaning an absolute necessity on NZ roads.

...you are so biased. Where is your thoughtfulness for the car occupants who could easily have been killed? Get into the real world! Facts are facts -
