Te Puke fire brigade turns 100

Fighting fires is all in a day's work for Te Puke Fire Brigade - a brigade that has 100 years of service behind it.

Today is the brigade's 100th anniversary of fighting fires, attending car accidents and helping the community.

Te Puke Fire Brigade is celebrating its centenary this week.

To mark the occasion, celebrations spanning four days have been planned with Life Honorary members invited to a bi-monthly meeting tonight at 7.30pm to mark the start of the celebrations.

Fire Chief Officer Glenn Williams says brigade members have gone to a lot of trouble to make the centenary celebrations an enjoyable and memorable event for all attendees.

Today's meeting will be followed by a registration night, with light refreshments and finger foods, on Friday.

'We are not planning on a late night here.”

A parade of fire appliances used by the brigade during its 100 years of service will roll down the main street of Te Puke at 11am.

This is being followed by a static display outside the old dairy factory on Jellicoe Street.

Glenn says Life Honorary members are invited to march with the brigade in front of the appliances during the parade.

Once the parade and static display is over, members of the public are being invited back to the Te Puke Fire Station to have a look around and see what it takes to be a firefighter.

'At 6pm the Centennial Dinner will start at the Te Puke Memorial Hall on Jellicoe Street. This will include speeches by dignitaries, dinner, presentation of brigade honours a cutting of a cake and dancing and socialising.

'Sunday morning will include a church service at the St John's Anglican Church next to the station at 10am and anyone who wishes to attend is welcome, service personnel please wear uniform.”

The weekend will be wrapped up with a barbecue lunch for those wishing to join the brigade before they head home.

'I am extremely proud of the efforts our members have put in to make this a special occasion and I trust this weekend will live up to people's expectations.”
