Tauranga built boat 11th in Fastnet

Southern Ocean Marine-built superyacht Liara finished 11th in the 2009 Fastnet Race.

Her actual time was 3 days 1:44.25 - 4 13:56.48 on handicap.
The carbon-hulled and rigged luxury performance yacht was closely watched at the start of the Fastnet, having taken line honours in the cross channel derby the Cowes-St Malo race, beating most of the top Fastnet competition by 24 minutes.
Niklas Zennström's Ran 2 is the overall handicap winner of the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race. The Judel-Vrolijk designed 72-footer finished the race in an elapsed time of 63 hours, 1 minute and 33 seconds, which corrected out to 2 hours, 19 minutes ahead of the second-placed Italian America's Cup team Luna Rossa on board their STP65.
Led by Volvo Ocean Race veteran Tim Powell, the all-star Ran 2 line-up includes seasoned race boat navigator Steve Hayles and America's Cup sailors such as Adrian Stead and Emirates Team New Zealand's Andy Hemmings, Richard Bouzaid and Richard Meacham.
The combination of spring tides and light winds in this year's Fastnet Race favoured the larger boats.
They were able to make the tide at Portland Bill on the first night, giving a lead that proved unassailable.
The headland sticks out like a rudder in the water and many of the big boats just made it past there before the tide turned.
Those that didn't make it tried to find more breeze offshore to escape the tide, others anchored and waited for the tide to turn.
Liara went inshore hoping for the land breeze, but had to wait for it.
A Liara crewman blog on the Fastnet website acknowledged they never recovered from 'the parking session west of Portland” and on the approach to the rock saw the leading yachts that got away from them at Portland passing on their way home.
But for the crew of 29 on board Liara for the race, including SOM director Greg Prescott, there were compensations.
While the crews on the racing shells existed on freeze-dried meals, Liara was boasting roast chicken drumsticks followed by peanut brownies served on the weatherdeck.
Liara has a top notch hotel equivalent galley and a full cinema. The saloon sole became a cross between a theatre and accommodation for the off watch.
