A Tauranga man may have broken a world record after reeling in a 354kg tuna in Greymouth this morning.
Kevin Baker, who is on his way back to Tauranga, was on a fishing charter in the south for the last week and hauled the possible world record breaker in at 4am.
Kevin Baker's 354kg tuna.
His son David Baker says the current world record is 334kg.
David says his father has been texting him the details about the catch.
'He caught it off the coast of Greymouth. Him and about six other men had chartered a boat for the week and have been finishing for three days straight.
The tuna was caught when the fishermen were on their last run this morning.
'When they got the tuna back to the dock, dad had to get the police and a justice of the peace to see if the catch is legit.”
David says it's now just a matter of waiting to see if the record is made official.
Kevin's catch will feature on 3News tonight.
