The smiling John Key appears to be determined to proceed with the ETS, despite the objections from so many people dreading the cost this will entail.
That old saw 'international obligations” has been trotted out, but a recent remark made by the hapless Nick Smith could provide an insight nearer the truth. Gazing wide-eyed into the camera he said, 'I have spoken to some people and they said that they would not deal with us unless we kept the ETS.”
A political decision? Who knows? However, one thing is certain; if we had a strong and loyal opposition, the present administration would be forced to think twice before embarking on the 'Helen” trail.
That lady left us a legacy befitting her reign. Scampering off to enjoy her reward, she left her party in tatters, with no one groomed to suitably fill the gap and tainted by the odium that she had so industriously nurtured. To have a truly democratic state, there must be an effective opposition.
And let us remember: 'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
