Women eye top spot

Bay of Plenty women's rugby is hoping an exciting amount of talent in their under-18 squad results in title winning success at this year's Northern Region tournament.

The side, featuring nine members of the Rotorua Girls' High School side that took out the Baywide girls' secondary school competition earlier in the season, starts its campaign against Thames Valley at Paeroa Domain on September 7, before facing Counties Manukau in Rotorua on September 14 and Waikato in Te Awamutu on September 21.

Rotorua Girls' High School have nine players in this year's bay of Plenty under 18 squad.

The finals will be held in Rotorua on September 28, with the Bay side looking to go one better than last year's second placed finish behind champions Auckland.

Manager Katherine Bennett said there is plenty of exciting women's players coming from schoolgirl and club rugby.

'There is good representation of players from Rotorua Girls' High School in the team,” says Bennett.

'But unfortunately only two players from Whakatane took up the opportunity to trial for the team this year. There are 11 players returning from last year's squad.”

Bennett says the side has had ample preparation with four rounds of the Baywide women's competition, and plenty of international experience.

'We have international flavour, with exchange students coming from Iceland and Japan and New Zealand representatives in touch, gymnastics, taekwondo and kickboxing.”
