Tauranga gym owner and chartered accountant Ian Stevenson is accusing Tauranga City Council of using public money to compete against private businesses.
Speaking for Contours, Ocean Blue, Fitco, The Gym, Body Zone and Global Fitness, Ian says the council promised answers to the gym owners' concerns when they were first raised in July this year, but it has failed to do so.
They are concerned that people who join the Baywave gym, ClubFit, are being given free pool use that would normally cost $709 as an incentive to join. Ian says the gym membership costs $948. The gym owners cannot find out if the cost of the pool membership is paid back to Baywave by the Baywave gymnasium.
At a meeting on July 6, they were promised an answer in three months after TCAL took over running the former LeisureCo assets, and they still haven't got one.
He included in his address to council questions about the competency of Tauranga City Venues Ltd directors, city council staff and councillors.
The replies from councillors and staff are that TCAL is audited and produces reports according to the legal requirements.
He was also told it would take a year of performance figures to get the answers.
Ian does not accept that. TCAL has been in control of the former LeisureCo gym since July and Ian says there have been more than three months operation of the facility which is enough time to create a ledger to provide some answers.
The council undertook to provide that information in three months and Ian wants to know where it is.
