What's on Today? Air Force open day

Aviation enthusiasts will have the chance to see the Royal New Zealand Air Force Camp up close today with an open day at Tauranga Airport.

Around 100 RNZAR members flew into town last week for a 10-day training camp – their first training exercise out of the Ohakea base since beginning training six months ago.

Squadron Leader Lyn Coromandel says the camp, run with the help of 60 support crew, aims to teach pilots about flying in unfamiliar areas.

Trainees undertook short sorties and regular flights of up to 100km around the Western Bay in the CT-4E air trainers.

People will have a chance to take a look at the action and meet the squadron at the open day today from 10.30am to 2pm.

Aircrafts on display include air trainers, Beech King Air B200 turboprop planes along with three helicopter models – the UH-1H Iroquois, A109 and NH90.
