Family refute crash findings

Samantha Mouat's mother, Lisa Strydom, is refuting the findings of an investigation into her daughter's death.
The 15 year old mini-stock racer from Mount Maunganui died after crashing her vehicle at a racing event in Kaikohe on April 3.
Findings from an investigation indicate a mechanical fault in Samantha's vehicle was the major contributing factor to the crash.
The investigation involved a number of experts, including Circle Track Racing Association member Tony Taylor.
Tony says driver-error, which was initially thought to be the cause of the crash, has been ruled out.

Samantha's casket is taken into Baypark for her funeral on Thursday, April 8.

'At the moment it's tending more towards a mechanical problem, away from driver error. But no one has ever stated driver error was the cause.”
He believes the mechanical fault will be very common in mini-stock vehicles.
'I would say it would be very common on all their vehicles. It's very concerning.”
Lisa Strydom is contesting the findings of the investigation and is also upset she was not personally informed about the investigation and had to find out through the news media.
'It was just a tragic accident. I was there, I was watching my child race and I know the condition of the car.”
'These mini-stocks have been racing for 14 years. She's the first mini-stock racer to be killed in 14 years. If it was a design fault, there would have been more.”
Lisa says her family were eating dinner when they first heard about the investigation on the television news.
'We watched it on the news and my family actually dropped their food.”
'They released her vehicle the very next day. They wouldn't have done that if the vehicle was at fault.”
Tony would not go into detail about the mechanical fault they identified but hopes to release that information this week.
'It's going to be a Coroner's inquest too so we have to be seen to go through and do it properly.”
